African Regional Forum: The Role of Parliamentarians in policy making and legislation for promoting Science, Technology and Innovation, Abidjan, 3-5 December 2013

ISESCO, in collaboration with the African Observatory of Science and Technology Innovations (AOSTI) organized a regional forum on the role of parliamentarians in policy making and legislation for promoting science, technology and innovation.

The role of Parliamentarians as legislators and supervisory body of the executive power, is essential to integrate science, technology and innovation in the development plans. As representatives of the people, parliamentarians can play a fundamental role in the promotion of STI and the formulation of relevant policies to meet the demand of the productive sector and the needs of populations. The forum is important in the sense that it will initiate a dialogue between parliamentarians and regional organizations mandated to measure STI activities. The dialogue will enable regional organizations to better know the request of parliamentarians regarding STI instruments. Also an opportunity will be given to parliamentarians to discern the contribution of STI in their role as legislator.

Objectives of the forum:

-          Strengthen the capacities of Parliamentarians from selected ECOWAS countries (Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Guinea, Mali) for a better consideration and increased integration of STI in development programs of their respective countries.

-          Strengthen partnerships, cultivate dialogue between parliamentarians, policy makers and scientists, representatives of the media, civil society and the private sector;

-          Create a space for exchanges to strengthen the Inter-partnership in the field of STI.
